Pâte de verre
Pâte de verre is an ancient glass-making technique. A model of the final piece is made in wax, and then used to create a plaster mould. Glass powder is hand packed into the mould, and then the entire assembly is fired to create the final artwork.
This technique was practiced for thousands of years in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt until the invention of glass-blowing, which made it easier to produce glass vessels rapidly.
The pâte de verre technique was revived and elevated into an art form during the French art nouveau movement.
